Law firms’ best international strategies
Internationalisation has become one of the main drivers of growth for law firms and a means of positioning themselves with clients whose activities are increasingly extending beyond national borders. This reality is reflected in the award for Best International Strategy at the eleventh edition of the Expansión Jurídico Awards, a category created this year as a special commemorative award to mark the 40th anniversary of EXPANSIÓN, which recognises excellence in the definition, development and implementation of an international strategy.
ECIJA was one of the seven finalist firms in this category, alongside Addleshaw Goddard, BDO Abogados, Garrigues, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, Hogan Lovells Cadwalader and Pérez-Llorca (the winner of this year’s awards). The projects submitted demonstrate that internationalisation is no longer measured solely by the number of offices opened abroad, but by the ability to offer consistent, top-quality advice wherever clients operate.
In the specific case of ECIJA, the firm has 37 offices in 18 countries, making it the Spanish law firm with the largest presence in Latin America. Over the past year, ECIJA completed the roll-out of the Harvey artificial intelligence tool across its entire Latin American network, a key technological move within its expansion strategy.
On the financial front, the firm generated turnover of more than 122 million euros in 2025, 19.5 per cent more than the previous financial year, with international revenue accounting for more than half of its total turnover. In addition to its focus on technology, its global strategy was underpinned by the appointment of new senior executives and the acquisition of high-value mandates for international clients.
