PROFILM warns that Spain is losing competitiveness in attracting international film shoots

News23 June 2026
ECIJA participates in the strategic debate on Spain's competitiveness in attracting international film shoots and improving the fiscal and regulatory framework of the audiovisual sector.

As part of the presentation of The Global Report on International Audiovisual Investment in Spain 2025, produced by PROFILM, Helena Suárez, a partner at ECIJA, participated as an expert on fiscal and legal matters in the roundtable dedicated to analyzing the main challenges and opportunities facing the international audiovisual sector.

Her contribution was made in a context of concern within the industry about Spain's loss of competitiveness as a destination for international shoots. According to the report's data, direct investment in 2025 amounted to €103.9 million across 24 projects, representing a significant drop compared to the previous year, with declines in both the volume of investment and the number of productions and jobs created.

During the event, where she shared the stage with other experts from the legal and fiscal sectors, key issues for the future of the sector were addressed, such as the need to update tax incentives, strengthen legal certainty, and streamline administrative processes. These factors are considered crucial to halt the relocation of productions to other more competitive European markets and to consolidate a solid audiovisual industrial policy in Spain.

Additionally, the report highlights the structural economic impact of international productions, which not only generate direct investment but also drive a wide value chain encompassing employment, technical services, infrastructure, and auxiliary sectors. Between 2021 and 2025, this activity attracted nearly €983 million in investment and created over 6,000 associated jobs, consolidating the audiovisual sector's position as a key engine of the national economy.

In this context, ECIJA's participation highlights its active role in the main debate forums of the sector, offering a specialized legal and fiscal perspective on the regulatory challenges facing the industry. Helena Suárez's presence in this forum reinforces the firm's position as a leading advisor in the design and implementation of regulatory frameworks and incentives related to international audiovisual production, in an increasingly competitive and ever-evolving environment.
