Geographical Indications recently issued by IMPI and those in the pipeline
Geographical indications recently issued by IMPI and those in process.
One of the powers of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) is to study and issue all the geographical indications that protect the exclusivity of the products produced in Mexico, having as an obligation to exercise all the actions for their protection and defence, thus guaranteeing the cultural enrichment and production in Mexican lands.
To understand the importance of this obligation, it is important to understand the concept of geographical indication established in the "Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Designations of Origin and Geographical Indications" adopted by the Mexican legislation, in which it is determined as, "any designation which, by including or referring to a particular geographical area, designates a product as originating in that area because its quality, reputation or any other characteristic of the product depends directly on the cultural or natural characteristics of the given area".
The main objective of the geographical indication is to guarantee the exclusivity that a geographical area has over its products, thus protecting its cultural promotion, the commercial impact of the product and the work of those who produce it, which are particularly important activities in Mexico because its cultural wealth is internationally recognised for products that are produced exclusively in the country.
In this context, and as part of the legal mechanism that materialises this protection, the IMPI has issued multiple Geographical Indications that are important to know not only to identify the products that Mexico produces, but also so that those who participate in the elaboration of these products can guarantee their exclusivity over their commercialisation, for which reason those that have been most recently recognised are listed below.
