FIRE International: Vilamoura 2026
María de Mulder Rougvie, counsel in the Litigation and Arbitration department at ECIJA Barcelona, spoke at the FIRE International conference : Vilamoura 2026, organised by Thought Leaders 4, one of the world’s leading forums on fraud, insolvency, asset recovery and cross-border enforcement (Fraud, Insolvency, Recovery & Enforcement).
The event, held in Portugal, brought together leading professionals from the international legal and financial sectors to address the main challenges and developments in asset recovery, cross-border litigation and the fight against international fraud.
María spoke on the panel dedicated to "Sanctions Work", alongside Adam Kaufmann (LBKM Law, United States) and Kateryna Gupalo (Arzinger Law Office, Ukraine), during which they analysed key issues relating to the international sanctions regime and its impact on asset recovery and cross-border litigation. Her contribution focused on analysing the sanctions framework from the perspective of the European Union, an area in which ECIJA has direct experience in both Spanish and European jurisdictions.
In addition to this session, the conference addressed highly topical issues such as the enforcement of judgments and awards across multiple jurisdictions, internal corporate fraud and its impact on corporate governance, fraud claims linked to ESG and greenwashing, enforcement against sovereign states and sovereign wealth funds, cyberfraud and the use of criminal proceedings to combat it, as well as the role of artificial intelligence in investigations and asset recovery.
