Is the TSE's commercialisation of personal biometric data legal?
The Agency for the Protection of Inhabitants' Data (Prodhab) ordered the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) to request the informed consent of Costa Rican citizens to use their personal biometric data in the marketing of the Identity Verification System (VID).
"This resolution sets a historic precedent in Costa Rica. For the first time, the data protection authority expressly declares that biometric data are sensitive data and that no public institution, no matter how important, can market them without the consent of citizens. The TSE is not above the law," said Mauricio París in his interview for El Financiero Costa Rica.
