News13 October 2026
The new director is joining ECIJA’s Madrid office to lead the development of a new practice specialising in digital transformation, innovation and the technological optimisation of the tax functions of large corporations.

ECIJA is expanding its capabilities in innovation and transformation with the launch of its Tax Innovation division, which forms part of Legal Innovation and is led by María del Carmen González de Luis, who joins the firm from PwC Tax & Legal.

The new division, which will form part of the Legal Innovation practice, has been established with the aim of supporting large organisations in the comprehensive transformation of their tax functions, combining tax expertise, strategy, processes, technology, data and artificial intelligence.

With this launch, ECIJA is extending its innovation and transformation model to the tax sphere, broadening an offering that bridges the Legal and Tax functions and responds to organisations’ growing need to evolve towards models that are more efficient, technology-driven, data-oriented and closely integrated with the business.

At the helm of this new capability will be María del Carmen González de Luis, a lawyer with over 12 years’ experience advising major national and international groups, IBEX 35-listed companies and multinationals across various sectors on corporate tax, tax governance and tax function transformation projects.

Coming from PwC Tax & Legal, González de Luis has extensive experience in advising on multidisciplinary projects related to tax strategy and governance, the transformation of operational models, digitalisation, TaxTech and the adoption of generative artificial intelligence.

According to Alejandro Touriño, CEO of ECIJA, “we are building a firm in which innovation and artificial intelligence permeate all our areas of work and transform the way in which we support our clients. The launch of Tax Innovation represents a further step in that direction and enables us to extend to the tax sphere a transformation model that we are already driving forward through Legal Innovation. The appointment of Carmen, with her exceptional combination of tax expertise, business acumen and experience in technology and transformation, will enable us to develop a truly distinctive offering for tax departments”.

For her part, María del Carmen González de Luis notes: “The tax function is evolving towards an increasingly strategic model, in which good tax governance, technology and innovation play a key role. In this context, technology – and, in particular, artificial intelligence – is opening up new possibilities for redefining not only the way tax teams work, but also the value they can bring to organisations.”

The creation of Tax Innovation reinforces ECIJA’s strategy of integrating innovation and artificial intelligence across the board into its service delivery model, developing new capabilities that combine legal and tax expertise, consultancy, technology and transformation to comprehensively address its clients’ main challenges.

González de Luis holds a double degree in Law and Business Administration and Management from Carlos III University in Madrid, a Master’s degree in Corporate Taxation from Comillas Pontifical University, and has completed international training in International Business & Leadership at Aalto University – Helsinki School of Economics.

González de Luis’s appointment forms part of the firm’s clear commitment to the tax practice, building on the recent recruitment of María Cortizas from Dentons.
