Roundtable Discussion on Sustainability and Business Competitiveness
Last Wednesday, 24 June, a round-table discussion entitled ‘Sustainability and Business Competitiveness’ was held, organised by CECRA – the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the Argentine Republic. The event, held online, brought together companies that operate, export or are planning to establish commercial links between the two regional blocs.
The meeting addressed an agenda of growing importance to the corporate world: sustainability is no longer merely a reputational issue, but a key determinant of competitiveness, market access and positioning within global value chains.
Fernando López Peña, lead partner in the Corporate Sustainability practice, moderated the closing session, which was dedicated to outlining a common and pragmatic agenda.
Key themes of the debate
Throughout the meeting, participants discussed four main themes:
- The impact of European regulations on international business
- The local implementation of sustainability, governance and environmental management policies
- The challenges and opportunities presented by the EU–Mercosur Agreement
- The role of sustainability as a factor in business competitiveness
A context of regulatory transformation
The roundtable discussion took place at a pivotal moment for bi-regional trade relations. Against the backdrop of the debate on the EU–Mercosur Agreement, European sustainability regulations are imposing new requirements on Latin American companies seeking to maintain or expand their presence in the European market, making regulatory compliance a strategic competitive advantage.
