Génesis Bermeo: a human, practical and empathetic view of law
Génesis Bermeo is a Senior Associate at ECIJA Ecuador and is part of the Real Estate, Immigration and Litigation practice areas. Her story speaks of a way of practising law that combines logic, sensitivity, honesty and a deep capacity to understand the people behind each case, procedure or conflict.
"Your profession does not define you completely; it is only a part of the person you are."
Although she initially thought of studying psychology, Genesis found law to be a practical, logical and deeply human profession. Over time, and especially as she began her professional experience, she discovered a special affinity for litigation, conflict resolution and close accompaniment of clients.
Law as a way of helping
For Genesis, one of the most valuable aspects of law is its ability to help people in different contexts: companies, individuals, businesses and organisations.
From her perspective, practising law means offering concrete solutions, accompanying important processes and generating peace of mind in times of uncertainty.
"With this profession, you can help people in every aspect. Moreover, it is a very logical and practical career, and that caught my attention."
That vocation was consolidated when she started working and found in litigation and conflict resolution a career path that connected with her way of thinking, analysing and accompanying.
Listening, understanding and proposing solutions
Genesis defines her way of working as flexible, practical and deeply human. For her, law requires adapting to scenarios, proposing solutions and, at the same time, understanding the reality of those who require legal support.
"I think I have a flexible perspective: I adapt to what is available and propose solutions. But I am also very sympathetic to the client or the person who is requiring something."
That empathetic outlook means that her work has a very marked human component. In her experience, law is also a social profession, where interacting with people, listening to their concerns and understanding their needs is an essential part of the service.
"Law also has a very social side. You interact a lot with people, and showing empathy makes the work more human."
Honesty as a differential value
One of Genesis' most defining values is honesty. In her work with clients, she seeks to give clear, realistic and responsible answers, even when the scenario is not straightforward.
Its approach seeks to convey reassurance, but without creating false expectations. If there is an alternative, he raises it; if an issue requires further analysis, he acknowledges it; and if something cannot be solved in a certain way, he communicates it clearly.
"I don't like to paint a rosy picture when there isn't one. I prefer to be clear, ethical and honest with the client."
That combination of empathy and frankness defines her way of advising: close, but firm; understanding, but always responsible.
A close and horizontal professional environment
For Génesis, working at ECIJA Ecuador means being part of a demanding professional environment, but also close, horizontal and human.
After three years at the firm, she highlights that the working environment is one of the elements she values the most. For her, ECIJA Ecuador is different because work is not experienced as a rigid or mechanical dynamic, but as a space where people can relate to each other in an authentic way.
"Working at ECIJA Ecuador means having an environment that does not always feel like work, and that is very important for me.
He also highlights the possibility to talk and work with partners, associates, interns, assistants and administrative teams without unnecessary barriers. That dynamic strengthens trust, a sense of teamwork and collaboration.
"You can talk to everyone without restriction. That makes the dynamic very horizontal."
Being a woman within the procedural area
Génesis is also part of the Litigation team at ECIJA Ecuador. For her, being a woman in this area has been a positive experience, marked by trust, openness and professional respect.
She emphasises that she has found a space where her opinions are listened to and her contributions are valued.
"They give me my space, they listen to me a lot and the area leader trusts me a lot. He is always willing to listen to my suggestions and recommendations."
Although she acknowledges that, on a social level, there are still cultural challenges related to gender equity, her experience within the firm has been favourable.
She also highlights the importance of having women as references within ECIJA Ecuador, who inspire and pave the way for other professionals.
"At ECIJA Ecuador, being a woman and working as a lawyer is very empowering. There are women who are a great example and who help to position us more".
A life beyond the profession
Outside the professional sphere, Génesis finds balance in different activities that allow her to connect with other aspects of her life. She enjoys doing pilates, singing, playing guitar and studying psychology-related subjects.
For her, doing activities outside of work is essential to maintain a balanced life and to remember that a profession does not exhaust a person's identity.
"It's very clear to me that doing something other than work is important. Your job or your profession doesn't define you; it's just a part of who you are."
His interest in psychology is still very present. He is drawn to human behaviour and tends to look at situations from that perspective, seeking to understand how people act and what lies behind their decisions.
"I am very interested in human behaviour. I try to see something psychological in everything".
Music also occupies a special place in his life. Singing and playing guitar are spaces that allow him to connect with his artistic and personal side.
Everything is one day at a time
Genesis has a phrase that she tries to remember in both her personal and professional life:
"Everything is one day at a time."
This idea reflects her way of facing challenges with calm, perspective and balance. For her, taking one step at a time allows her to handle difficulties better, make better decisions and not lose sight of what is important.
Among the books that have marked her life, she highlights Many Lives, Many Masters, a work that she considers valuable for developing empathy and better understanding people. She also recommends La tregua, by Mario Benedetti, one of her favourite books.
Génesis Bermeo represents a way of practising law based on sensitivity, openness and empathy. Her career at ECIJA Ecuador reflects a vocation for accompanying clients with clarity, responsibility and closeness.
Her story reminds us that professional excellence is also built from human quality, honesty and the ability to listen.
