Octavio Canales is a partner at ECIJA Chile and has extensive experience in tax law, corporate tax planning and business restructuring

With over twenty years of professional experience, he has advised national and international companies, family-owned groups and high-net-worth clients on tax planning, corporate structuring, business reorganisations and long-term tax strategies.

His practice has focused particularly on comprehensive tax advice for complex transactions, the design of efficient corporate structures, and strategic support for business processes with national and international tax implications.

Previously, he was a manager and partner in EY’s Legal and Tax Department, and was also a member of the firm’s Latin American International Tax team based in New York, where he took on the role of ‘Chilean desk’.

Throughout his career, he has built up recognised technical expertise in tax and corporate matters, actively participating in tax planning, business reorganisation and strategic consultancy projects for companies across various sectors.

In the academic sphere, he has an extensive teaching record in postgraduate and tax specialisation programmes, having lectured at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the University of Chile, as well as speaking at various seminars and specialist conferences at national and international level.

He is also a member of the International Fiscal Association (IFA) – Chilean Branch and a member of the Chilean Institute of Tax Law.


Academic qualifications:

  • Chartered Accountant and Auditor.
  • Postgraduate degree in Tax Law, University of Santiago de Chile.
  • Master’s degree in Law, specialising in Tax Law, University of Chile.
  • Law graduate.

Awards and memberships:

  • Member of the International Fiscal Association (IFA) – Chilean Branch.
  • Member of the Chilean Institute of Tax Law.
