Artificial Intelligence Manifesto

Innovate. Govern. Create value.

Artificial Intelligence is transforming how we work, produce knowledge, make decisions, and create value. In the legal profession, it is also opening new possibilities for how we collaborate and deliver legal services.

At Antas da Cunha Ecija, we want to take an active part in that transformation.

We adopt and explore Artificial Intelligence in our practice, develop new ways of working, and help our clients navigate this change, turning innovation and regulation into decisions, governance models, and processes that work in practice.

We do so with one conviction: technology should amplify people’s capabilities - knowledge, judgment, creativity, and decision-making - without diluting the responsibility that comes with them.

As signatories of the EU AI Pact, we commit to promoting the responsible adoption of Artificial Intelligence and preparing in advance for the European regulatory framework.

This manifesto sets out the principles that guide that path.

  • Una figura solitaria camina a través de un vasto espacio arquitectónico iluminado por rayos de luz que entran a través de ventanas rectangulares.

We use Artificial Intelligence to enhance our teams’ work, support analysis and decision-making, and find new ways to meet our clients’ challenges.

Technology does not replace knowledge, experience, critical thinking, or professional judgment. We maintain human oversight appropriate to the purpose, risk, and autonomy of the systems we use, and we ensure professional judgment remains the responsibility of qualified professionals.

We use technology to amplify our capabilities, keeping judgment and responsibility where they belong: with people.

Technological innovation must respect people and the rights that protect them.

We use AI in accordance with fundamental rights, human dignity, equality, and non-discrimination. We seek to identify and mitigate bias risks and assess the impact technology may have on people, organizations, and decisions.

The new ethical and legal challenges that come with technological change are part of how we evaluate, adopt, and govern Artificial Intelligence.

The use of Artificial Intelligence in our practice must preserve what is essential to the lawyer-client relationship: confidentiality, independence, rigor, and trust.

We protect professional secrecy and the information entrusted to us, and we integrate privacy, data protection, information security, and intellectual property requirements into the selection, contracting, and use of AI solutions.

We also protect the value of the knowledge and work produced by our teams and our clients, considering the rights applicable to content used and to outputs generated with AI, and seeking to respect third-party rights.

We ensure a level of transparency appropriate to the nature, purpose, and impact of the technology, and we apply the same rigor to the solutions and technology partners in our ecosystem.

Innovation and governance

Responsible innovation

Innovation requires curiosity, experimentation, and the ability to learn.

We test new technologies and use cases to understand their capabilities, limitations, and risks before integrating or scaling them in our practice.

We experiment responsibly, with defined objectives, risk assessment, and oversight proportional to the context.

We also integrate sustainability into our technology choices, considering the environmental impact of Artificial Intelligence and promoting efficient, responsible use of resources.

We do not want responsibility to limit innovation. We want it to enable better innovation.

Governance by design

Responsible use of Artificial Intelligence requires more than principles. It requires governance.

We integrate responsibility, risk management, and oversight throughout the technology lifecycle - from selection and contracting to use, monitoring, evolution, and discontinuation.

We define responsibilities, assess risks, and adapt our controls to technological change and to different levels of system autonomy.

Our governance structure includes an AI Oversight Committee responsible for monitoring the use of Artificial Intelligence in the organization, overseeing the application of internal principles and rules, and reporting. We periodically review our models and controls and incorporate what we learn.

We follow the EU Artificial Intelligence Regulation and the rest of the applicable legal and regulatory framework. In evolving our governance model, we also consider recognized international principles and frameworks, including the OECD AI Principles and relevant international standards on the responsible management and use of AI.

We aim to go beyond formal compliance, turning requirements into governance, risks into controls, and responsibilities into processes that work in practice.

Knowledge and capability

Responsible use of Artificial Intelligence depends on the people who use it.

We invest in literacy and training so our teams understand the technology’s capabilities, limitations, and risks, and know when, how, and for what purpose to use it.

We want professionals who can combine legal knowledge, technology, and critical thinking - questioning AI outputs and finding new ways to solve legal and business problems.

Knowing how to use Artificial Intelligence also means knowing how to question it.

  • La imagen muestra siluetas de personas iluminadas por rayos de luz en un ambiente oscuro.

We do not only want to advise clients on Artificial Intelligence. We want to understand this transformation from the inside.

We use, test, and evaluate AI in our own practice and bring that experience to the work we do with our clients.

We share what we learn, develop approaches together, and integrate the legal and regulatory dimension into the adoption process itself—from experimentation and contracting to governance, use, and monitoring.

We combine law, technology, business, and governance to build responses that work in each organization’s reality.

Because we believe the next generation of legal services will be built with clients, not only for them.

Our commitment

Artificial Intelligence will continue to evolve. We will continue to experiment, learn, and evolve with it.

We do so while holding on to what is essential to our profession: independence, rigor, critical thinking, responsibility, confidentiality, and trust.

This manifesto accompanies that journey. Not as a closed statement, but as a commitment that evolves with the technology, with our experience, and with our clients’ challenges.

Innovate with ambition. Govern with responsibility. Create value with trust.
