Alejandro Touriño analyses the new role of lawyers in the era of artificial intelligence and the structural transformation of the law firm model.

The Aranzadi LA LEY Foundation has published the eighth edition of the Innovation and Trends Report in the Legal Sector 2026, a collective work that brings together thirty experts to analyse the changes —sometimes disruptive and controversial— that are redefining the practice of law, the organisation of law firms and the economic evolution of the legal sector. In this context, Alejandro Touriño's participation, managing partner of ECIJA, consolidates the firm's position as one of the players leading the strategic conversation about the future of the legal business.

Under the title «Lawyer in the loop», Touriño addresses one of the central debates of the moment: the role of the lawyer in an environment marked by the structural integration of generative artificial intelligence. Far from proposing a techno-deterministic vision, the article proposes a model in which technology does not replace the legal professional but amplifies their decision-making capabilities. AI processes, systematises and proposes; the lawyer supervises, contextualises and assumes final responsibility. It is precisely in this strategic supervision where the differential value of the legal professional is redefined.

The approach is not limited to the adoption of technological tools, but proposes a deeper transformation of the operational model of law firms. The key is no longer solely to gain efficiency, but to redesign processes, structure knowledge and create systems capable of learning, scaling and providing predictable results. In this new paradigm, lawyers are evolving into a hybrid profile, with the ability to combine legal judgment, technological understanding and strategic business vision.

Touriño's contribution is included in the central section of the report dedicated to innovation in the legal sector, along with digital transformation directors from major law firms, experts in technological regulation and opinion leaders in the legal field. His participation not only reflects the weight of ECIJA in the debate on artificial intelligence and digital transformation but also reinforces the coherence of the model that the firm has been promoting: a legal practice that integrates technology, processes, and talent as the core of its value proposition.

At a time when the legal sector is facing a structural redefinition of its traditional dynamics, the thesis defended in «Lawyer in the loop» positions the lawyer at the centre of change, not as a spectator, but as the architect of a new system of legal service delivery. This vision anticipates the immediate future of the profession and confirms ECIJA as one of the leaders in building this new model.
