ECIJA incorporates Rafael Piqueras to strengthen its Competition Law practice

With over 18 years’ experience in competition and EU law, Rafael Piqueras joins ECIJA to boost the Madrid team, reinforcing the firm’s strategic growth in Spain and Latin America.

ECIJA's new partner has an extensive international background in competition and EU law, having advised companies in multiple sectors on merger control, foreign investment, anti-competitive practices, cartels, distribution agreements, abuse of dominance, state aid, litigation and damages claims, as well as in the design and implementation of competition compliance programmes.

With over 18 years of experience, Rafael has been involved in high-profile national and international competition transactions and cases, working in multi-jurisdictional teams and advising clients in numerous sectors, including regulated sectors such as technology, energy, food and pharmaceuticals.

Prior to joining ECIJA, Rafael developed his career at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he worked for 12 years in the Antitrust,

Competition and Trade, and at Deloitte Legal, where he headed the Competition and EU Law practice in Spain.

A graduate in Law from Universidad Pontificia Comillas ICAI-ICADE, with an LLM in Corporate Legal Consultancy from IE Law School and a specialisation in EU Competition Law from King's College London, Rafael has also developed his teaching career, lecturing at leading universities and postgraduate programmes.

He also actively participates in the specialised legal community as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Association for the Defence of Competition (AEDC) and, since 2022, he is a Non-Governmental Advisor (NGA) of the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) in the International Competition Network (ICN).
