August: a relative lull for big firm leaders

News30 July 2025
Hugo Écija shares how he combines leadership and disconnection during the summer, reflecting ECIJA's commitment to its clients even in August.

The business daily Cinco Días has published a special report on how the main managing partners of the major law firms in Spain face the month of August. In the article, Hugo Écija, president and founder of ECIJA, shares his views on the value of rest as part of personal and professional balance, and reflects on the international growth of the firm.

Among the protagonists of the report is Hugo Écija, CEO of ECIJA, who reflects on his way of disconnecting without losing his strategic focus: "Sport is, without a doubt, my way of disconnecting".

ECIJA's CEO defines August as a pause in the usual rhythm of work, although he recognises that total disconnection is incompatible with his responsibility. "My phone is always on," he says. Sport, especially triathlon, is his way of finding focus. "Training gives me the chance to reflect, to prioritise and to visualise the strategy in a better perspective. In fact, he claims to have made key strategic decisions while cycling or swimming in the sea. He recalls an anecdote: "I was at the Alpe D'Huez triathlon and before the start I received a call about the biggest operation of the year, which was in danger of derailing. When it was over, I proposed a solution that satisfied all parties and it was successfully closed". For Hugo Écija, summer is the ideal time to renew ideas, incorporate new perspectives and reinforce habits that are then transferred to professional life.
