Here’s your guide to enjoying the city’s most exciting (and often underrated) cultural activities after dark.


Theaters and Performing Arts

San José is home to a thriving performing arts scene, with year-round offerings in Spanish and occasionally English.


  • Teatro Nacional: A must-visit for architecture lovers and performing arts fans alike. Located in the heart of downtown, this 19th-century jewel offers classical concerts, opera, ballet, and contemporary theater.
  • Teatro Espressivo: A smaller, more modern venue offering intimate performances of international and local plays, dance, and live music.
